4 reasons why you should strength train alongside your climbing
Athletes in all sports do supplemental strength training. That's because it's one of the best things you can do to improve performance and avoid injury.
Climbing is no exception, so here are four reasons why climbers should also supplement climbing with strength training.
1. Get stronger
''I'm just too strong to climb this problem'' - said no one ever
Stronger upper body = Better traction and lock-off strength.
Stronger lower body = Better step-ups, mantles, push-offs, deadpoints and body control.
Stronger core = Better power transfer between upper and lower body, especially on overhanging climbing walls.
2. Increase your capacity
The more strength you have in general, the less force you use on individual movements.
This gives you higher capacity to have more quality trials on the project.
3. Lower risk of injury
Lifting weights strengthens your muscles, but also your bones and connective tissues (tendons and ligaments) and therefore increases injury tolerance. Climbers should also perform prophylactic training (injury prevention). If you have a weakness in your body, such as a previous injury, you should consult a physician or trainer for some good injury prevention exercises.
Less time spent on injuries is more time climbing!
4. General health.
More than just supplementing your climbing, strength training will keep you healthy for longer.
Maintaining your muscle mass and bone density is important for living a healthy life and allows you to keep doing the activities you love.
Good training!
